NOTE THE LITTLE RAMORA FISH HITCHING A RIDE
3-11-2010

A HARD FLAG (wind vane) is a specially configured fish that can ride on a hollow pole
on top of Varuna Vibe and withstand the wind while driving up to 30 - 35 mph.
Note the flat space on the bottom (throat area) of the fish.
This will be the place where the pin that goes inside of a metal tube (pole)
will hold the fish in place in the wind  and allow it to twist depending on the wind direction.

The one behind the new Hard Flag is of an early fish with a guide.

HARD FLAG 3-12-2010
I may not make this a hard flag.. We will see.

As this will be a street flag, I am using corks as the round things.

Much Gesso is now flowing.  Several Coats before color is added.
This will make it strong and heavy.  I have made many of these over the
years and they withstand a mordeate wind.
I do not go over 30 with them up.
If they were to fall, they are basically paper and paint.
Note the mounting bracket caping the green pipe. It is made from
a plastic screw on cap and two heavy chopsticks.  I will do a photo
of this soon. It has to be reterofitted into a smaller pipe.

This is the part that holds the wind hard flag fish in the tube.
Two strong chop sticks are driven in and the base is glued together.
The chopsticks are driven inside and, in this case, the tips end in the eye area
thus getting a strong stabilization from the glued on layers.
Later, the base will be fitted with wrapped wire and more glue
to obtain the desired angle and leave room for the vane to work in the wind.

Ramoras are fish with a sucker on the head that attach to larger fish for a ride.
They are do not harm the larger fish.
                                                           This is called "Commensalism"
These here use their mouths to hold on.
This is called artistic license. (smile)  3-14-10

  1. The popcorn treat ion the wind vane will not work well so this one may or may not have a baton. It is possible to have a baton with a way to fit a pole into it as desired with a line and popcorn. We will see.
